What are the primary causes of asthma?

Posted by HCA on Monday, 29 November 2010 - 3:21 pm - Filled under Asthma

The cause of asthma isn’t known precisely, many suppositions have been made, but none was unanimously accepted. But we know that a mixture of factors play a role in the appearance of this disease. Genetic factors or heredity are recognized by all medical institutions that study asthma, since it is well known that a child with asthmatic parents or relatives has an increased chance of getting the illness too.

The environmental factor also must be mentioned as a cause of asthma, as more people have an overprotective way of raising the children so that they are not exposed to any environmental changes at all, even if they are perfectly healthy. In many cases such precautions leave the child unarmed against external aggression for which defenses would have been naturally stimulated. Many parents don’t understand that an inoffensive flue can trigger an allergic reaction from the child’s immune system.

Frequent use of antibiotics at the first sign of illness in combination with a poor immune system may evolve to bringing further allergy and even be the cause of asthma. Then we could also mention unhealthy habits with young children. Scientists believe that lack of physical activity in open air can slow the functioning of the immune system and expose the child to the risk of getting asthma.

Another cause of asthma is poor quality diet, including all the processed food we tuck in because we don’t find the time to cook a healthy meal. The increased amount of fat in the food, the lack of fish oil and other vital elements from our diet makes the human body more susceptible to sickness. The work place with its specific conditions may be a cause of asthma; there is exposure to dust and all kinds of irritants that favor the apparition of respiratory illnesses.

If we have a look over statistical data we find out that asthma cases have increased all over the world, the most affected places being the highly industrialized cities where one out of ten children suffer from asthma symptoms. Consequently we can’t skip pollution as a cause of asthma, by the great density of harmful gases present in the atmosphere that act as allergens responsible for the attacks specific to the disease.

Allergens vary a lot as they can be natural particles like pollen, animal hair, dust, cold air or various chemicals from detergents or smug to any other toxic substance. The hardest part with allergens is that you don’t know which one irritates you until it happens several times, so try making a sort of diary where you should note what you ate, smelt or touched every day. After each crisis take a look to your notes and see what the cause of asthma may be under the circumstances.

Effectiveness of birth control

Posted by HCA on Friday, 26 November 2010 - 3:18 pm - Filled under Birth Control

Family planning is a necessity in our society today because of the fact that the earth’s resources are becoming less and less every year and in a study it is estimated that there would be 12 million infant births in 2025 alone. From 8 million in 2019 every year there is an increase of 1.004 million births.

Looking into these statistics the effectiveness of birth control as it relates the number of infant births per year is still pretty high. The campaign of different sectors of government has become more and more aggressive in the past few years targeting larger urban areas in big cities.

Even with the heightened awareness about the importance of family planning and birth control methods the effectiveness of the campaign still remains underwhelming in terms of results.

Some of the factors that may contribute to the lack of positive results of the campaign on birth control is the fact some people still are not aware of the different methods that are available to them. In the past it has been the problem for some government agencies to make people accept contraception because of the massive disagreement that Catholics showed saying that it is only God that can give and take people’s lives.

Of course these people are talking about abortion which in fact is not a form of contraception nor is it a form of family planning or birth control.

Abortion is in fact a crime in a lot of countries and most of the states of the US.

If people protests against birth control because they believe it is a form of abortion then that means they are under informed and that they are ignorant to the concept of Natural birth control. Because of the opposition that contraception received from moralists and religious orders, the concept of Natural birth control was introduced.

Though the confusion of the idea caused people not to believe in it at first, it has been regarded as more favorable by the anti-contraception groups.

Contraception methods are what we call artificial birth control. These methods include condoms (both male and female), hormonal method, birth control pills, Intrauterine device, ligation, spermicide (chemical only), spermicide with sponge, injections (Depo-Provera) and Vasectomy.

These are just some of the most common methods that include the use of different devices or chemicals to prevent sperms and egg cells from meeting.

Recently it was known that not only is birth control effective in planning the family but it also effective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases and other infection in people.

Because some of the devices used in birth control prevent contact of skin in the reproductive organs, the chances of catching the infection are minimized if not totally eliminated. So aside for the health department campaigning for married couples to plan their family for the future, young couples are also requested to use protection to prevent the spread of Sexually transmitted diseases and/or early pregnancy(that is also a big issue not only in the United States but all over the world).

The effectiveness of birth control methods greatly rely on the cooperation of people who are directly or indirectly affected by the issue. It may not be enough to just talk about it but more on acting upon it and getting the results that are badly needed by the country and the people of this planet.

Natural steps of detoxification

Posted by HCA on Wednesday, 24 November 2010 - 2:35 pm - Filled under Detoxification

There are many health food stores, nutritionists, and people in general who perform body detoxification methods on their body each and every day. The main reason for doing so is because they truly work and many people find that these detox plans help them to stay healthier as well. Needless to say, there are plenty of body detoxification systems that can be used, however, one only needs to find the right method that works for them. Just as there are thousands of recipes that will tell you how to make a good stew, so too are there thousands of recipes that will tell you how to perform a body detoxification. All of these recipes combine the natural remedies that should be taken at one time or another, but they all have the same general goals, too.

If you are wondering why a natural body detoxification should be done, there are also many reasons for it. In order to be successful with naturally cleansing the body, one must realize the total benefits that a detoxification can do for them. For example, throughout time and over the years as individuals age their body and organs becomes full of toxins that are absolutely not necessary. These toxins live everywhere in the body and organs: they are hiding in the liver, the colon, the kidneys, the lungs, the bladder, skin, lymph nodes, as well as many other places throughout the body. Through a body detoxification, though, your body and organs throughout the inside of your body is completely cleansed. The detoxification methods are like having a total new person inside and out.

There are also many methods for performing a total body identification as well. One of the methods includes digesting raw juices and foods throughout the day or week that you have planned your detoxification method. For example, there are plenty of healthy juices that one can buy in natural and organic health food stores, however, the best way to ensure that one is getting totally natural ingredients is the purchase them at regular grocery stores. By taking natural celery, spinach, broccoli, carrots, as well as different spices of one’s choosing, these ingredients and healthy foods should be combined in a blender to make natural juices. Fruit and vegetable juices, without the aid of any sweeteners like sugar, are the only types of juices that one should ingest during a detoxification.

Other things that should only be included in the diet are soups of all kinds. Even though vegetable soup is the best way to complete a body detoxification, there are various other kinds of herbal soups that can be found in health food stores that will aid in a body detoxification. One should be aware, though, that vegetable broth is the best for a detoxification and should be used often.

The only other thing to include in your detoxification diet is water. Water should be the only liquid (besides fruit and vegetable raw juices) that is consumed during the entire detoxification. It is actually recommended that one consumes at least a gallon of water per day of the detoxification, unless the detox plan is only one day. If it is only one day then at least one-and-a-half gallons of water should be consumed.

All in all, now you can see some of the very important reasons for performing a total body detoxification. These reasons, though, along with the natural steps towards a detoxification, will aid anyone with their total body cleansing goals!

Treating dry skin rash

Posted by HCA on Monday, 22 November 2010 - 12:20 pm - Filled under Skin Rash

Dry skin rash is usually not serious, but it can become very uncomfortable and keep you functioning like you normally would. In some cases, the dry skin rash becomes painful and very irritated. That is why you should never self-medicate. Always consult your doctor when you or someone you know develops dry skin rash. Only a dermatologist can prescribe the right creams or pills for your condition.

What causes dry skin rash?

Dry skin rash is very common during the winter, when your skin is exposed to dry and cold air. Skin loses its moisture, causing its surface to crack. If you live in a windy city or an area with low humidity, you may also become more prone to skin rashes. The same is true for people who are in air conditioned quarters all the time (such as offices).

You may also have inherited your dry skin rash – especially if anyone in your family has a history of ichthyosis (characterized by fish scale skin). If you have a metabolic condition (especially under active thyroid glands), you may be more prone to dry skin rash. Some people who undergo excessive and rapid weight loss programs sometimes suffer the same skin condition.

Experts also conclude that predisposition to dry skin rash increases as you age, because your skin is not anymore able to produce the required natural lubrication needed to prevent dryness.

Do you bathe too often? Then you may also be inviting dry skin rash. Exerts agree that showering or bathing too often using soap strips the skin of moisture. You may also be inviting dry skin rash if you swim a lot in strongly chlorinated water (hot or cold – it does not matter). Some detergents also cause dry skin rash.

Treatment of dry skin rash

In order to manage and prevent rashes, you first need to identify the factor (or factors) that trigger it. Refer to the list above to see which one causes your skin to crack and redden. If we did not mention the cause, ask your doctor.

Try to take showers instead of long baths. Showering exposes you to less water and less chemicals, possibly preventing your skin from drying up. Try replacing your soap (which might be causing dryness) with moisturizing formulas or bath oils.

If you often do laundry and get exposed to harsh detergents, switch to milder (synthetic) cleansers. Ask your dermatologist if he or she can recommend any.

Try to apply moisturizers and emollients whenever you can, liberally. This is best done after you shower, or whenever your skin feels dry and itchy.

If your eczema patches are serious, go to your doctor. He or she will probably prescribe topical steroids – you may be asked to take it for about five to 15 days, depending on your skin’s condition.

Common causes of erectile dysfunction for males older than 60

Posted by HCA on Friday, 19 November 2010 - 3:02 pm - Filled under Sex Life

Erectile dysfunction can definitely hurt a man’s physical and mental ability to enjoy sex. Even if he is turned on by a woman and wants to complete the act, the body simply isn’t going to comply. This is an event that just about every single man out there will experience at least once in their life, especially as they get older. It isn’t a big deal unless it is happening on a regular basis.

The key to getting past it though is to realize that you aren’t alone. Too many men hide their issue with erectile dysfunction from everyone. They are too embarrassed to tell their partner so they may look for reasons to avoid sexual activity. They can pick fights, become distant, and even make the partner feel bad about their appearance to cast blame in another direction.

For those not in a serious relationship, erectile dysfunction can prevent it from occurring. They know that eventually a new relationship will get to the point where sex should be taking place They don’t want any women to find out they can’t perform so they withdraw from women in a social setting all together.

It is important for men to realize that there are many common causes for erectile dysfunction. Therefore there is no reason to feel inadequate about the process taking place. It is going to be a natural part of getting older for many men. A doctor can often help to identify what the cause of the problem is though and help a man get his sex life back.

Vascular disease accounts for more than half of all the erectile dysfunction cases in males over the age of 60. This has to do with the arteries to the penis getting blocked and so not enough blood can get to it for a full erection. This is a condition that can often be treated though.

Smoking is a common issue that can lead to it as well. Males who smoke more than a pack of cigarettes per day are at the highest risk. Stopping to smoke can make a huge difference for the individual in just a month or two.

There are a variety of medical problems that can lead to erectile dysfunction for men. The biggest one though is diabetes. The nerved and blood vessels to the penis may be damaged and so there isn’t enough blood that is allowed to flow into it for an erection to take place.

When we hear about hormone problems and sexual behavior for those over 60, it is mostly associated with women. Yet approximately 5% of all males suffer from some type of hormone problem. That is what is responsible for their problems with getting an erection. They may have a problem with their kidneys or liver due to hereditary illnesses or excessive alcohol use.

Some men fail to product enough testosterone as they get older so they need a supplement to help with their sex drive. There are also times when traumatic experiences can affect the normal ability to get an erection. It could be due to an injury that harms the spine or even due to the onset of various diseases that affect the central nervous system.

Doctors have to be careful about prescribing medications for various ailments as well. All prescription drugs have side effects and hundreds of them have impotency as one of them. Since many of these drugs have to be taken on a daily basis it is a huge concern. These various medications may be to treat heart disease, diabetes, depression, or anxiety. It is important for a doctor to try to find a good medication that works but doesn’t affect the ability to obtain and maintain a natural erection.

With all the technology available today, that is no reason for a man over 60 to suffer from no sex life. There are simply too many ways in which they can be helped. However, this help can’t be offered unless they are open and willing to discuss their sexual problems with professionals.

The psychology of weight loss

Posted by HCA on Wednesday, 17 November 2010 - 5:33 pm - Filled under Weight Loss

You see the razor-thin models gracing the covers of magazines… you watch actors and actresses on the big screen who seem to never gain a pound. And you wonder: How do I differ from them? You may be surprised to learn that a number of famous people at one time had difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. But they were able to conquer their problem, thanks to a new-and-improved, healthy view of eating.

You may not realize it, but there is a certain psychology at work in successful weight loss. It is no surprise, then, that the magazine Psychology Today has explored the issue in-depth. In October of 2004, the magazine posted an article on its website detailing the experiences of Diane Berry, a nurse practitioner who studied women who had shed at least 15 pounds and had maintained their weight loss for an average of seven years.

The women shared some important things in common. For instance, they all achieved their weight loss through either Weight Watchers or TOPS, which meant that they had a firm support network as they tried to maintain their weight. The group meetings were highly important, because they learned to recognize that they were certainly not alone in their struggles with weight. The women were also quite unusual because up to 90 percent of individuals who have lost weight end up putting it back on within five years.

Another common trait of these women is that they appeared to undergo a profound mood shift as they made the transition from fat to thin. From all indications, they appeared to be depressed when they were heavy but, as they attempted to lose weight, their mood brightened.

For these women, healthy eating became a habit—a habit they refused to break. They themselves recognized the tremendous role that psychology plays in weight loss. They refused to give in to negative feelings of frustration and denial and chose a positive path instead. The women also made it a point to weigh themselves regularly so that they could chart their progress.

And they recognized that maintaining weight loss would be a lifetime struggle. They knew that they could not attempt a weight loss program then put it back on the shelf. They had to learn new eating patterns that they could continue week in and week out. In some cases, they likened their struggle to that of an alcoholic. In other words, they recognized the gravity of their problem and took steps to correct the situation.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of these women’s experiences was the fact that their weight loss actually came in spurts. At times, they regained their weight, but they did not let that deter them from their final goal. They simply viewed their setbacks as challenges that they needed to overcome. This may be the key psychological trait that separates successful dieters from unsuccessful ones—perseverance. In essence, these women were able to change their personalities in a positive way in order to achieve their long-term weight loss goals.

Another interesting aspect of this study was that it showed that the women who had undergone weight loss transformation were genuinely happy. This shows the tremendous psychological impact that weight loss can have on an individual. Once an individual is free from the burden of extra weight, he or she is better able to meet the challenges of life head-on. The dieter benefits from positive reinforcement, as relatives, friends, and co-workers congratulate him or her for the weight loss. In this way, losing weight can be quite a life-affirming experience and can lead to a more optimistic outlook on life.

It must be noted here that the psychology of weight loss is a complicated matter. There is no single ingredient that can turn a fat person into a thin one. However, recognizing that there is a psychological component to successful weight loss may, in fact, be half the battle. Once an individual recognizes that he or she is engaged in a psychological fight, he or she is better able to do battle. By retraining oneself to seek healthy approaches to diet, one can, in effect, mold oneself into a new individual—one that no longer lives to eat, but simply eats to live.

Where to go to delay the aging clock

Posted by HCA on Monday, 15 November 2010 - 5:28 pm - Filled under Anti Aging

We don’t actually have to mention, but for many, staying young is almost an obsession. But who really cares? Well, these are the avenues where your obsession can best benefit you. And you’d really love to care.

First Stop: Hair Salon

Alright, we all know that this establishment is a must-stop to look younger. But if it happens that you will go here, would you know what to instruct the stylist for you to look young?

Tell your favorite hair artist to give you a shorter do. A long hair for an experienced lady would more or less make her look like a witch. Trimming on the shoulder or shorter boosts up one’s vitality. This takes the attention away from a sagging face. You may also have some bangs and layers. Bangs brushed on the side softens the wrinkles on the forehead. Layers make hair more lively and youthful.

Or try telling your hairstylist to add some colors on your crown of glory. This increases the volume of the thinning hair brought about by hormonal changes. Not to mention, this also covers up gray hair preventing them from looking ashy.

Hairstylists also recommend soft, tender brushes after a shower of emollient shampoo to give bulk to the thinning hair.

Next stop: Derma’s space

Yes, you can look good by yourself, but going to the skin specialist once in a while spells a huge difference. Take the celebrities for an example.

Dermatologists give benefits that our bare hands alone can’t bring into fruition. Dermatologists may apply some cosmetics like alpha hydroxy acid. This is used to reduce the lines and folds on the face, as a chemical peel, and enhance skin’s overall look and feel. When used as a chemical peel, dermas explain that alpha hydroxy acids can change the pH level of the skin to spawn collagen that enhances tonicity of the skin. Collagen, as we age, diminishes in itself, developing wrinkles and pores.

Dermatologists may also recommend topical treatments and broad-spectrum sun block lotion that would prevent you from sun exposure. Too much revealing of skin to sunlight causes the largest percentage of sagging, dark spots, and fine lines. We do not notice this effect because it’s not an instantaneous one. Best topical prevention includes those that have antioxidants and retinol.

Third stop: Spa

From massage to facials to jacuzzi, a treatment spa is absolutely a perfect haven for those who’d like to stay young. Visiting it can be the most enjoyable trip ever.

A worthwhile massage provides comforting relaxation to treatment to more specific physical problems. It can also relieve stress and improve the blood supply of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. It can also aid in the recovery of some muscular problems. And at least in part, an hour of it can compensate for lack of workout and muscular contraction.

A facial in the spa provides cosmetic therapy of the face. It involves a multiplicity of skin treatments like exfoliation, peels, steam, extraction, and masks. Not only is it soothing but an age-defying remedy as well.

The warming and freshening comfort of jacuzzi can transfer your soul to another dimension. A jacuzzi uses colors to further healing not only in the body but also in the mind. Each of these colors has a particular wavelength that affects the release of hormones and other organic materials within the body.

This positively changes one’s mood, feelings, or emotions.

Vitamin for acne treatment

Posted by HCA on Friday, 12 November 2010 - 4:24 pm - Filled under Acne

Before proceeding to a treatment based on medication that may have side effects, people are recommended to try a few alternative methods. Following a certain diet or taking specific vitamins may prove to be an efficient way to stop acne from developing. In addition, these measures may be used along with medication, when treating more severe forms of acne. Vitamin A is considered a very good acne vitamin, since it is able to act in several ways.

This acne vitamin is fat soluble. In other words, this means that the body assimilates it better when fat is present. The main effects of this vitamin are represented by improvements of the night vision and hormone production. In addition, it controls the functions of the digestive, respiratory and urinary tracts. The development of skin, bones and teeth are also influenced by this vitamin. Furthermore, a deficit of vitamin A is reflected in a weak immune system.

Vitamin A is regarded as an acne vitamin since it is able to cure serious forms of acne. The daily doses of between 300,000 and 500,000 IU proved to be effective. However, people must know that these doses are very high and that such quantities of vitamin A may harm the body. Therefore, people who suffer from severe forms of acne are allowed to use this acne vitamin only if they are monitored by doctors. This acne vitamin is harmful because the excess is not eliminated from the body, as it happens to the water soluble vitamins. Instead, the excess accumulates in the body, fact that may lead to liver and nerve damage. Liver and nerve damage are effects that appear when taking this acne vitamin for prolonged periods of time.

Some tests have been performed in order to discover a safe way to use this vitamin in the treatment of acne. Severe acne can be treated by using 300,000 IU of natural vitamin A each day for 2 weeks. After this period, people are advised to take 100,000 IU each day for two months. Nausea and headaches are two side-effects that become visible when taking such high doses. This is why people are recommended to stop using this acne vitamin when the side effects appear. In addition, people must know that the amount of vitamin A must not be taken all at once. In fact, it is better to spread the entire amount and to take the smaller doses along with a meal.

Skin care tips
You may be young and you want to experiment with every aspect of your life. For young girls, you may already be experimenting with make-ups and other chemicals that promise to contain your young look and fresh skin.

Here are some of the tips that you must follow in order to slow down the aging process of your skin. And oh by the way, this goes out to young boys as well.

1. It is a must to wash your face. But do not do this too often, especially if you do not have a water purifier installed in your house that your only source for this act is the water coming straight from the tap. It actually contains chlorine which can add to the risks of developing wrinkles fast. If this is the case, wash your face once a day. This way, you will be able to retain a good amount of moisture and oil on your skin.

2. In washing you face, use mild soap. Choose the brands that have moisturizers as part of the ingredients. Do not use soaps and even deodorants with alkaline. If it cannot be helped, just avoid it.

3. Choose a brand of moisturizer that is water based. After washing your face, use a clean and soft towel to pat your skin dry then add the moisturizer.

4. The sun also contributes a lot in developing lines on your face. What you must do to counter this is to apply sunscreen when you are going out. This should be applied even you are only going to be exposed to the sun’s rays for a short period of time.

5. The sleeping position can also contribute to slow down the process of developing the unwanted lines. You can try lying on your back when you are sleeping. But only do this if it will be comfortable for you. The effect of this act is that it will offset the gravity’s effects.

6. Avoid smoking. You are young and you may want to try it all. But this vice is really not going to do anything good to your skin. Plus, your health will also suffer through time. When are you going to quit? When people mistake you for a 40-year-old than the 20 something that you really are? You surely don’t want to take that route.

Everybody will develop wrinkles as they age. But while you are young and can still prevent it, do something about it. The abovementioned tips will hopefully do the trick for you.
